I believe there's a place for experts & nurseries, but how do you reconcile with that mass production & consumption, where the industrial juggernaut weighs against change, with #PeatFree compost for example?

The IMO#3 all mixed with soil and compost and laid over a bed of the allotment. After being covered in a layer of dried hay it was also covered by cloches to protect it a little more from the rain and attention from curious animals.

Hopefully 🤞 by next weekend it will covered in white fuzz & I’ll have made my first IMO#4. It will also have inoculated the bed it’s on prior to that being planted up or sown.

IMO#4 is a living soil amendment containing a broad spectrum of minerals and diverse local biology. I’ll store this in containers and it has a variety of uses.

I’ll add it in small quantities before I add any compost or mulch to the soil. It can be added to beds prior to seeding or planting or added to inoculate a compost pile. It can also be applied as foliar feed or soil drench.

There's a company near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that's making "PittMoss" potting mixes, an alternative to peat-based mixes. It's made from shredded, recycled newspaper. I've only ever used their plain shredded paper, adding it to my own potting mix of homemade sifted #compost, perlite, etc. but it works fine. The paper seems to hold moisture without making it soggy. Some larger stores and nurseries have already stopped selling, or growing in peat-based compost, as the removal of peat causes significant carbon release and damage to delicate ecosystems. @Beedazzled This is disgraceful. Restoring and protecting peat lands are key to many species survival on this planet, including our own, as they provide vital habitat and store vast quantities of greenhouse gases. 30 million tons of CO2 have been released from peat land since 1990 to grow plants that don’t need peat in order to grow. That is utter stupidity and an environmental catastrophe.

We need to keep peat in the ground where it belongs and not in plant pots or on garden beds.

We need to ban peat use now. 2030 is too late. In 2010 industry was given until 2020 to complete its transition to peat free. Now that’s been extended to 2030. It won’t happen unless we make them stop.

I’m self sufficient in homemade compost these days but I used #peatfree compost for years beforehand. Peat free composts can often be over or under watered I think because they can look and feel different to peat composts people are more used to.

I mostly used New Horizon peat free as it was cheaper than most peat free brands & I found it ok. I can’t vouch for its merits now, it’s been a while.

Design is a process, #CAD is a tool, *working with #nature* is the principle!

This means #NativePlants where possible, #FoodForest #ForestGarden for edible crops, #organic, #PeatFree compost etc.
