@euenvironment @EU_ENV the other day I met a German scientist who thought to stop draining all #farmland was a good idea to halt GHG emissions from #peatland. However he could not distinguish #Moor and #Marsch. I was not sure whether we build up peat on every soggy spot we stop draining. #drainage #agriculture

@wildarchaic The specialist science seems to be on the #peatland tag, but obviously the specifics depend on where in the world you're setting your story. Peat bog under permafrost is different to temperate zones.

Today’s incumbents in those same 18th century estates are now busy hovering up huge sums of taxpayer money for #peatland #restoration and #afforestation to put right the ecological damage done over decades by their forebearers …and in many cases the current ‘entitled’ scroungers.

WOW! 😍 Check out this stunning #Sphagnum moss which is colonising new bog pools created by rewetting at our 2021 #peatland #restoration site. Sphagnum is very important for fostering peat formation in blanket bogs and can absorb up to 20 times its weight in water! I'm looing forward to seeing this vegetation develop at our newer sites currently under restoration management.
