Peatlands are swampy vaults for toxic chemicals. Wildfires are setting those toxins loose.

Spent off on childcare duty.
But here's a pic of the moor from a little wander the other day, trying to decide on a good spot for a bench lol. Hard work.
Ground nesting bird season is officially over tomorrow, so back on with restoration work thereafter.

It's good the Nature Restoration Law passed but it has been so badly gutted. So sad to see those @FineGael signed Amendments passed - difficult to understand just how bad they are...

For years to come, many people, even if they could, are not going to even try to reduce their own gas emitting activities. Planning for sustaining the long-term future of societies is not part of their mindsets.

program "Conserve and restore to slash global emissions"unep.org/news-and-stories/pres

That phrase is partially misleading as peatlands sequester - they don't reduce emissions. Reducing the burning of fuel reduces emissions. Do both!

The general long-term (lifestyle \ culture) solutions to transition & adapt human behaviors (activities) away from an ecologically damaging, climate-changing civilization towards an ecological & climate-sustaining civilization are known. qoto.org/@Empiricism_Reloaded/

Business As Usual (BAU) tries to continue by generally doing more of the same (BAU is "baked" into the BAU economy & those that only think in BAU terms). For example, BAU is promoting more mining for resources which means more damage to nature (wildlife habitats) and more pollution.

BAU owns land that BAU doesn't want to use for nature restoration.

This means that BAU will continue to not meet its own BAU greenhouse gas reduction targets (BAU's aim is crap as it keeps missing climate-related targets).

Because BAU has generally done a less-than-crap Job at reducing the BAU greenhouse gas emissions (because BAU emissions are rising ourworldindata.org/greenhouse-), BAU is now planning for a future where the effects of climate change are much worse. BAU won't stop BAU so BAU is trying to adapt to climate change by doing more BAU (that makes "sense" for BAU). For example, BAU is about using more resources and power (e.g., burning more "fossil" fuels) to construct higher flood defenses. Basically, BAU is about exploiting nature so as to extract resources and power BAU technologies (& make tech BAU folk rich by selling BAU products).

So, as BAU continues to degrade nature in the name of BAU (e.g., promoting & sell more BAU products & services), more people will come to realize that BAU is the problem. We can't solve a problem by doing more of the BAU problem (but problems make BAU people money...so, go figure).

When more people accept that BAU is the problem, then, and only then, will more people think about the real solutions to prevent humans from damaging , therefore, changing the . In other words, scale down BAU before it's too late to prevent the worst climate impacts qoto.org/@Empiricism_Reloaded/

When it's clear that BAU is failing to mitigate climate change (what will that take?) - because climate change is causing more harm to people's lives. When it's clear that BAU is the cause of climate change, then humans will change BAU.

The Planet's climate doesn't consider what we want. It will show what we can't have and that's a BAU ( \ ) that's damaging and polluting nature as friggin usual.

A short explanation of how we emitted greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and how we can choose to reverse that trend.

A relatively long time ago (human time frame), photosynthesis sequestered Carbon out of the planet's atmosphere, and eventually, long explanation short, that carbon became Coal, Oil & Gas - that process took hundreds of millions of years.

Not that relatively long ago, humans deforested the majority of woodlands (in many countries) & burnt most of that wood as wood fuel, therefore adding Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere So, to this day, in many countries, for example, the United Kingdom, what remains are relatively small amounts of fragmented woodlands (& tree plantations that are used for woodfuel & timber)

Only about a few hundred years ago, humans got very busy extracting Coal out of the ground, and burning it (the industrial age), therefore adding more Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere. As human knowledge of science & technology developed, humans also learned to extract Oil & Gas, from relatively, not that deep beneath the Planet's crust - they burnt that Carbon, therefore, added more Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere.

During this time, humans were also expanding agriculture. This caused more natural habitats, for example, peat lands that store carbon, to be drained so as to graze animals for their body parts (e.g., wool, meat & leather). Sheep and cows belch methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere.

Only about 50 years ago, some scientists that were working for an oil company, learned that Carbon dioxide, a byproduct of the fuel industry's core product, was causing climate heating. The oil industries & their associates (e.g., the car industry) decided to suppress that scientific understanding. (or "snake oil"). Also, the industries suppressed the science regarding how traffic pollution harms human health. Or at least, that information doesn't promote their products so.....

That just about brings this historic explanation up to the present.

The people that study ecology & its sub-subjects such as climate science (the scientific understanding) know that climate heating, & human-caused species extinctions, are an existential threat to Planet Earths' life support systems - therefore also to humans & their societies.

Now, reverse this history (as a thought experiment), for example, reforestation ("unburn" the trees) & stick the Carbon back under the ocean's crust & land masses, & we will have solved human-caused climate change. That generally would cause the climate's atmospheric Carbon Dioxide (CO2) ratio levels to be similar to pre-industrial & pre-deforestation (wood burning) levels (the carbon cycle without human intervention)

is the study of the Earth's over short time frames (e.g., a few years to twenty years) and long time frames (thousands, millions, or billions of years).

To (seriously) begin to mitigate climate change, at the very least, humanity in general, will have to aim to stop burning Carbon-based fuels (wood, coal, oil & gas - all of it!). Not "only" just stop oil! Stop burning carbon-based fuels as that's the fundamental problem. And, generally, stop farming ruminants such as sheep and cows (that emit methane).

Denial is often the first response when a challenge seems overwhelming or impossible.

Generally, to even begin to reduce legacy atmospheric CO2 levels, more carbon has to be sequestered out of the atmosphere, than human carbon burning activities are emitting.

That challenge is immense as we are still carbon emitters. Also, there are so many people that are not even thinking about reducing their CO2 emissions plus industries that are not even considering trying to stop selling carbon-based fuels.

The illusion is that mitigating climate change appears to be mission impossible. But, as the 'This is how we live sustainably!' post explains - climatejustice.social/@empiric

- by understanding the practical guidance and evidence, and of course, doing it rather than just talking about it, we can begin to resolve the climate change problem (reverse the historic ecologically degrading trend).

That means that the "reason" why humanity has not mitigated climate change is all due to unreasonable psychology (illogical. A generally maladapted nurtured psychology. e.g., capitalist consumerism, warfare, etc). In other words, the reasons are not due to the impractical aspects of mitigating climate change, the problem is due to human behavioral psychology.

So, share & adapt the 'This is how we live sustainably!' concept - climatejustice.social/@empiric

And make it clear that there is a difference between not being able to mitigate climate change (which we can) and not wanting to mitigate climate change (which they don't)
