Seriously, though, I am beginning to perceive the contours of a manifold class struggle in the history of Ibsen’s Peer Gynt: Asbjørnsen’s erasure of Hougen (“a boy”) and Pillarviken (portrayed as a crazy schoolmaster); Botten-Hansen’s plagiarism of Pillarviken; Ibsen’s erasure of all of the above; and the Anglo academy doing away with Norway altogether, if it can.

I want to get out there and spank their bottoms; Per Gynt belongs to Norwegian folklore, and as such belongs to the Norwegian folk. This should never be forgotten.

I wonder if things have improved since 1917…
