However, yes, their society was garbage, relied on slavery to function, and involved regularly massacring the inhabitants of a nearby city for the lulz. It was certainly no model for anything good.
I'd suggest current enthusiasm stems more from the grotesque reimaginings of #FrankMiller and #ZackSnyder than any actual history.
