A point that I think is frequently missed in the discussion surrounding the new homunculus paper (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-023-05964-2) is that even Penfield himself said not to take his homunculus literally! And in fact we've known for quite some time that M1 in primates and rodents doesn't map solely to single parts of the body, but instead maps to actions too.
