Spencerian Standard Hand and Brandt's Duployan

As a writer, I prefer to write by hand, and I have taught myself to write like they did in the Victorian age. But shorthand is faster and more efficient. Brandt's Duployan is a cool shorthand! #shorthand #penmanship #amwriting

Was reading an article today in the New York Times (paywall) titled "What Killed Penmanship?" and it reminded me of a few weeks ago when I took out my notebook to report on a conference I had been to and my friend looked at my handwriting and asked, "what language is that?!" lol

But unlike what the article says, I'm old and left-handed, so my scrawl has always been illegible. Except to me, I guess.

In honor of #NationalHandwritingDay, a specimen of #penmanship from 1 of Boston's #18c writing schools. His instructor was keen to ensure that Samuel Bonner in 1751 would never forget that “Lamentation and mourning are the companions of Vice.” Samuel’s flourishes are pretty cool.

Write someone a letter.

I spent most of my life resisting writing letters and thank you cards. Starting in 2020, with a bit of time on my hands, I practiced my #penmanship and started sending #letters and #postcards. It turns out it's really satisfying to send and receive slow mail in a world where instant communication is cheap and readily available.

I have been trying to learn Getty-Dubay italic #cursive in idle moments. The results were ... less than satisfactory.

Today I tried writing giant letters with a coloured pencil instead. What a game changer!

I don't know why I'm surprised. This is how kids learn to write. :)

Folded guidelines worked well, too. It's a professional Chinese calligraphy technique and it looks awful with Western paper, but it really saves time for practice. #penmanship
