@penfount Two very different kinds of writing:

I have a number of excellent #penpals (at least two of whom are on this instance!) and I write them fairly long letters that get sent out into the world and take on a life of their own.

But I also write little throwaway notes during the work day, sometimes as short as a ticket number, that immediately get shredded or recycled depending on content.

Thinking about the 5 or so international pen pals I had as a kid during school and wondering if any of them are on mastodon.

I just got through watching #DearDoctor in #StarTrekEnterprise where #Phlox REALLY did not want to give Valakian's a cure for their epidemic caused by an evolutionary genetic disease (a genetic dead end), because it might hinder the development of another sentient species, the Menk, on the planet.

I found their rationale dubious.

I secure letters from my pen pals using this 15mm wide elastic and plastic clips from Daiso. I generally don’t make one until I’ve received two letters from someone, and the elastic has enough stretch that I’ve never had to make a longer band yet, even for pen pals dating back to 2018. #penpals

I haven't been here for a long time and I think you need a break sometimes. Instead of social media I enjoy writing letters (even more so lately) and being in direct exchange that way. If the regular mail were cheaper and more reliable, I would like to meet many more people this way, but there have to be limits, of course, so I can focus on my friends... It is so important to take time for each other and to respect everyone.

Becoming #penpals with people has filled a social void in my life that for the longest time I convinced myself didn’t need filling. Apart from daily #journaling, it’s the one non-pharmaceutical thing that has made the largest positive impact on my mental health. And it’s not like I even talk to my penpals about my mental health (except in passing) — it’s the social connection that’s enough. I’m so happy I found this hobby.
