And of course, Roger Penrose is also known for his discovery of aperiodic tilings known as Penrose tiling.

The diagram of Conformal Cyclic Cosmology by Penrose in post #2 in this thread reminds one of the "Turtles all the way down" metaphor.

Roger Penrose -
"I think I would say that the universe has a purpose, it's not somehow just there by chance … some people, I think, take the view that the universe is just there and it runs along—it's a bit like it just sort of computes, and we happen somehow by accident to find ourselves in this thing. But I don't think that's a very fruitful or helpful way of looking at the universe, I think that there is something much deeper about it."

Penrose also proposed the controversial Conformal Cyclic Cosmology (CCC) model, which posits that the universe cycles from one aeon to the next, each time it starts infinitely small and uniform, then expands and generates clumps of matter. Over time, the matter ends up in supermassive black holes, which eventually disappear by Hawking radiation. This restores uniformity and sets the stage for the next Big Bang.

Besides his seminal work on Black Holes, Penrose ventured into bridging the gap between physics and consciousness. He argued against the viewpoint that the rational processes of the mind are completely algorithmic and can thus be duplicated by a sufficiently complex computer. Penrose and Hameroff went to develop the controversial theory of quantum biology, which argues that consciousness is the result of quantum gravity effects in microtubules.

Happy Birthday Sir Roger Penrose (born Aug 8, 1931), British mathematician, mathematical physicist, and philosopher of science, regarded as one of the greatest living physicists, mathematicians and scientists.

He was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity".

Absolutely. Worthwhile reading up on 's work on this stuff too ( and Penrose Diagrams). Deals with how these related spacetimes are (would be) connected.

In the latest video I've made on writing your own window manager using Penrose I put together a quick layout wrapper/combinator/"fun thing" to enable something I've wanted for a while: changing how windows are positioned based on the screen resolution.
In the video I was only showing a single screen so demoing that wasn't really doable, but here's a quick recording from my phone showing what it looks like in action 👍

Two small projects using bindings to explore two algorithms and see what vector drawing can bring:

- The first one draws a von , using the classical recursive algorithm: github.com/vmagnin/von_koch_sn

- The second one draws a tiling (aperiodic tiling of the plane with two tiles): github.com/vmagnin/penrose_til
The algorithm is interesting as it uses two interlaced recursive procedures: A calls A & A & B, and B calls A & B.

@glynmoody surely there’s an application in cryptography, where a public key has an unknown origin point, but a predictable calculable neighbourhood

The same tiling non-pattern was identified in a video about tiles from Veritasium youtu.be/48sCx-wBs34

Aperiodic monotile discovered! It has been nicknamed "the hat". I've been fascinated with aperiodic tiling ever since I heard of tiles. This is the first time a single shape (and not a pair) of tiles can be tiled to infinity without ever creating a periodic pattern

This is cool! Aperiodic tilings of the plane by *two* tile shapes (named for Roger Penrose, who studied them) have been known since the 1970s. I did my undergrad project on them in 2000. Now they've discovered aperiodic tilings by a *single* shape. 🤯
