Nana Vasconcelos (1944-2016) was a percussionist who had an immense influence on my own understanding of what percussion can bring to music. I remember seeing him at the South Bank in London, a solitary figure surrounded by percussion instruments laid out on a large mat. With almost childlike playfulness his love of rhythm and sound was inspirational.
