First harvest of chives for the winter - washed, air dried, scissor cut and will be frozen on this tray overnight, then packed into a jam jar. They stay tasty for months and are a welcome addition to scrambled eggs, soup etc.

@alexisbushnell See also Welsh Onions, Perpetual Leeks, Society Garlic. are generally really hardy and once they get established, able to withstand the dreaded slugs and snails.

@alexisbushnell Get yourself some Egyptian onions aka Walking Onions, as small plants. They look like hearty Spring Onions, but are , so you’ll be able to crop them all year round, once they get established. They make little bulbs at the top of a stalk in July, this falls over and roots itself, hence they “walk” over your garden. Good sources include Incredible Vegetables, Backyard Larder, Pennard Plants and Otter Farm.

This is our Daubenton’s panache perennial kale. We cut it back not so long ago so we could keep the path. It’s doing very well & seems to like it’s spot near the compost heap.
Stays green & ready to harvest all winter.
It’s been the source of many cuttings shared with friends & we’ve just started a replacement plant for when this one collapses with it’s own weight.

@CogentHippo Perennial kale is such a hard worker in a small garden. I’m trying to find a variegated Daubenton’s kale at the moment. I took my Nine Star Broccoli out as it got too enormous and I couldn’t cope with the harvesting onslaught. are great value for money, eh?

@docdieterlen Very funny article, cheers. Me too, never got past the nasty marble stage with radishes. I’m all about now, which seem to be tougher than their annual brethren.

@Hellybootwader @Virginicus @livingarchitect Yep, they are tasty. And if you keep taking the flowers off, you might get your kale to perennialise. Try it on one plant to see what happens? I’ve got 3 year old cavolo nero plants. It’s worth a go.
