#renaissance #musichistory gang, do we know anything about the experience of people with #perfectpitch from this era (ie before absolute pitch, A=440hz stuff)? It seems like to anyone at the time some people might have been known to be good at understanding relative pitch, but could anyone distinguish between the two? Was there one experience then that now is actually two separate kinds of experience?

Related, is perfect pitch a noted thing in modern non #12TET music cultures?

Never thought of #perfectPitch as a form of #neurodivergence before, or that some people might use it as an excuse to behave like an absolute jackass

No, people aren't born with perfect pitch. Research found that you can develop it as a child, but only when you're growing up in a music-rich environment.

Which I did.

Perfect pitch doesn't make you a better musician. It can make life more difficult. Transposing can become a challenge, out-of-tune pianos short circuit your brain.

If I play an A minor chord, my brain *must* hear A Minor. If not, I can literally freeze.

If you're a musician, that can be helpful when you hear a song and want to write it down. It's sometimes a pain in the ass too. Literally.

But I guess it's not too bad to start writing some stuff down. Especially when playing with people who do not have #perfectpitch 🤪
