PERMACULTURE IDEAS FOR THE ANTHROPOCENE…
Could there ever be such a thing as bioregional agroforestry—a tree cropping systems producing food and useful materials that also has space for indigenous plant species and that is
adapted to regional climate and terrain?

Peter Hardwick thought so. I came across Peter’s idea while on a course at Robin Francis’ Djanbung Gardens permaculture education centre in Nimbin some years ago.

This is a brief introduction to Peter’s idea as it stood at the time. Let’s know what you think of his model and how you would adapt it to the region you call home.

Wow! Nice to find an organization that "gets" it and articulates what's been nagging at me for so long. Try as I might, I just can't get excited about spending tens of thousands of dollars on a , , and all the other virtue signaling "green" shiny things. It all seems like brittle technology that won't work very long, anyway. So when they break, which with BAU's built-in planned obsolescence they will inevitably do, then what?

Whatever the answer to that question is, it seems more logical to me to to use the money I do have to just skip to "it" and forget the fancy green tech that will only make some oligarch richer at my expense. But what is that "it"? What are those systems for those of us who don't want to rush over the green tech cliff with the other lemmings?

The only answer I have right now that makes any sense whatsoever to me is . The problem is, much of that still feels inaccessible to me.

FAREWELL CAROLYN… AND THANKS…
Friend, colleague, author, teacher. The sad news has just arrived that Carolyn Nuttall has left us.

It is some time now since Fiona and I last visited Carolyn. In the time since I have thought of her from time to time. She was such an easy going and smart woman who went about her permaculture work and her life with an enviable ease.

Allow me a few remembrances of Carolyn:
- the incredible coincidence of running into her in bookshops in a couple different cities
- her putting us up in her spare room when Fiona and I were in Brisbane
- her traditional Queenslander house of weatherboard and galvanised iron roof, raised high above her backyard with its banana and pawpaw trees, on tall poles and her neat vegetable garden at street level in the front yard
- staying in the little shack in her backyard, the big tree casting a welcome shade over the outdoor table in the Brisbane heat
- - the ritual of sitting out on the verandah with her on those lazy Brisbane afternoons, glass of wine in hand as we gazed absentmindedly over the galvanised iron roofs of Highgate Hill towards the buildings of the city not all that far away.

A TRUE PERMACULTURE PIONEER
Carolyn’s books were valued by permaculture educators. She pioneered the use of food gardens and permaculture in schools while a teacher at a Brisbane primary in the 1990s. Here she created a school food garden and made use of it as an outdoor classroom. Out of that came her books:

- A Children’s’ Food Forest
- Outdoor Classrooms: A Handbook for School Gardens (with Janet Millington)
- The Food Forest Resource Guide.

Carolyn was a true permaculture pioneer.

I wish, Carolyn, that we could have visited you in more recent times. You are still here, though, as a friend and colleague in memory.

So, thanks, Carolyn, for your friendship and your contribution. It is a privilege to have known you.

THINKING ABOUT PERMACULTURE…
I was thinking about David Holmgren’s book of over a decade ago, Future Scenarios. It is an attempt to map options that societies might take based on the availability of energy.

STORIES OF THE LAND…
We live in them, travel through then and sit and gaze at them. Landscapes are what we live our lives in.

But how do we understand landscapes? Where is the best place to build a home in them? That is what this story is about.

Great show. I especially loved the morning 'goat walk' on the commons! The goats have a tasty breakfast while decreasing the bushfire fuel load at the same time! If you're curious about what can look like, start here.

@bethsawin Yes, indeed! The beautiful elephant in the room: restructuring communities (infrastructure and productive patterns) to encourage easy adoption of (and adaptation to) sustainable lifestyles is clearly more sensible and feasible than selling high-dollar tech gadgets.

@clayton Same situation here...overwhelmed by all the options. So I mostly ended up picking plants. Overwhelm there, too. Finally, last winter, I took OSU's online Pro course, which forced me to focus, step-by-step on the whole site, not just plants. (In fact, they don't have you do anything with plants until something like the 16th week. LOL.) In any event, it helped immensely, and it was a blast as well. Loved every minute of it.

@DesignedEcosystems This is Bed D. I hit the jackpot on leaf bags this year (collected 100+) so decided to use 30 of them "as-is" along one side of the garden where I'd like to put some red & yellow raspberries in the next year or two. A good way to begin increasing fertility w/out taking the time for bed construction. Stakes with flagging tape mark the bags so my plow guy doesn't smash into them when he's pushing snow back.

@DesignedEcosystems This is Bed C, still awaiting compost fill. Possibly another juneberry in this bed, not sure what else yet.

@DesignedEcosystems This is Bed B on the plan. It's a keyhole bed design, nothing planted in it so far, but I'm thinking about a small juneberry cultivar, possibly some sea kale, and I'm not sure what else for next spring.

@DesignedEcosystems This is Bed A on the plan. I transplanted 5 wild tip-rooted black caps (Rubus occidentalis), and protected them from vole/rabbit damage in 1/4" hardware cloth cages. Garlic cloves are laid out prior to planting in the photo. At the end of the bed to the left of photo, I've put in some daffodils, but there's plenty of room left for insectaries, N-fixers, etc. in the bed. Bottom edge of this bed is laid out on contour (using A-frame).

@DesignedEcosystems The northeastern US has seen a 71% increase in extreme precip events since 1958. On the plan, the darkest blue area most commonly has standing water after heavy rain in avg. years. Lighter blue is the approximate extent of squishy ground after the most extreme rain events.

@DesignedEcosystems Hi Richard, here's the design. The yellow beds A, B, C, D are what I've been creating this fall. The thing to understand about the property is that there's a high seasonal water table (6-18") fall - spring, but w/ climate change, some years that includes summer as well. Avg. precip here is 46", last year (2021) we had 56", so the water table was visible much of the summer. 2022, we're well below avg., only 31" so far, so no standing water in the summer.
