A very lazy Sunday after a long morning walk. Now it’s a late Weißwurst breakfast followed by bacon with melted cheese, just to keep the cholesterol levels up. Accompanied with #beer and a Bembel of #perry.

This afternoon was spent mowing under pear trees that do t belong to us, but we have permission to harvest from. The first mowing, so it was a bit of work. Sometimes it’s part of the deal we make to get access to #pear #trees, that we maintain them, but it’s also about time to do this, as harvest is approaching, and short grass makes life a lot easier when picking pears up from the ground. #orchards #perry #cider

As a #cider and #perry maker, one is always keeping an eye on the trees, whether the blossom was good, what the weather conditions are like for pollinators, and then how the fruit is developing through the summer. This year wasn’t great for pollinators during #pear blossom time, so the harvest is looking a bit patchy.

A lovely roadside #perry #pear tree about a kilometre out of the village. Embedded in a large hedgerow it has been badly cut by the local council, but I still love the shape. Most likely Welsche Bratbirne.

Speaking of the pear tree, it’s that really early #perry #pear tree I’ve been wanting to use. Some early falls from the winds of the past week, but unripe, they should be bright yellow. May come back to mow later. But if they fall early Sept, I probably won’t have time.

The Swiss Tree Murder Part 2, where I conclude the tale of how Switzerland radically changed its fruit growing between 1950 and 1972, which resulted in the destruction of an estimated 11 million #fruit trees. This changed an entire landscape, as well as obliterating a centuries long tradition of #perry making. Cider has survived, but it’s no longer an integral part of everyday agricultural life.

Last year we got permission to use the trees along this field boundary. Well, not sure if we can use the apples, that part looks mown and cared for. But there are a few interesting pear trees. Especially that last one, which I have had my eye on for years. Quite an early variety, yellow pears with a wonderful citric zing, like lime.
