You can't just be handed hope. You have to strive for it and earn it. It cannot be obtained by waiting for someone else to take action while you stand by and do nothing.

Shadows of sadness,
That drown and distort.

The price of the up,
An inevitable down.

of meaningless time.
I persevere.

Through the endless demands,
of outstretched hands.

Though demeaning threats,
Form a cage of regrets.

As bright youth take my place,
And laugh in my face.
I persevere.

Denied all respect,
Striped of dignity to protect.
I persevere.

Drowning in voices,
That won’t hear my choices.
I persevere.

Mouth closed, eyes open,
Unheard so unspoken,
I persevere.

As an economic slave
In a rented grave.
I persevere.

Without hope of change,
Again and again.

I accept mistakes.
In silence I ache.

Are the brave still brave,

MATRIX on a road
to Aramoana

Still a wee bit of evening sun
on the road to Aramoana
with a headwind to sharpen senses.
I move at good speed,
for all I know,
through Potemkin villages.
Material, like magic,
woven through space and time.
Old beach huts, a Paradise duck,
Macrocarpa, wind,
waves, black swans.
I'm enchanted
and take my ride further
than planned, I persevere,
can't stop myself.
The props are placed
by someone
who knows me well,
someone
who loves me.

The sum of who participated
Then I remember lessons I forgot
Like winning’s overrated.

Researching my novel, I met with 6 Abenaki elders to talk about their lives & experiences. They've been supportive of my having two Abenaki characters in #HiramFalls; one read an early draft; another is reading the latest.

The day we first met, all six shared stories and each broke down in the telling. I'd never experienced such emotion. For so long. Afterwards, one said, "We #persevere because of the support & love & strength we give each other. That story is never told."

"I don't want to get on the boat daddy. I want to stay here." Asleep when I woke him, he was oblivious to the dangers that lay ahead. There was commotion at the dock in the dead of the night, desperate people seeking refuge from a life under an oppressive regime. No time for sentiment, I grabbed his hand and pulled him onto the rickety boat, crowded and not very seaworthy. I wrapped him in his mother's coat. The air was tense, we had no choice and there was no life for us here. The gamble was huge, but I had no choice.

He deserved a chance, and I was willing to risk it all.

Glacial surface
I can't do it.

It's a desert
Dust clouds pluming
Arid air burning

I am just human

Wandering aimlessly,
connections lost.
Doubt and uncertainties
plague my mind.
Dreams out of reach,
another failed manuscript.
The voices grow louder,
thoughts darken.
Maybe they're right,
an undeniable truth.
Dark of night,
battles rage
inside my mind.
I search for salvation,
desperate for respite.
Lost for words,
the anguish
overwhelms me.
Life weighs heavy,
rejection hard to bear.
Words written,
but never read.
Time has come
to purge my mind.
Silence the voices,
lock them away.
My notebook,
thoughts and dreams.
I will not give up,
silence the doubt.
I will write.
