Mars rover Perseverance sent what appears to be "parts inspection" type images yesterday.
These two objects are part of the Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman & Luminescence for Organics & Chemicals (SHERLOC) instrument, mounted at the end of robotic arm. It uses a UV laser and spectrometer to measure Rama scattering to determine fine-scale mineralogy and to detect organic compounds in Martian rocks.

If I'm reading correctly, there are currently 3 robots tootling about on Mars:
Curiosity (5 Aug 2012-?) 🇺🇸
Perseverance (18 Feb 2021-?) 🇺🇸
Tianwen 1 (14 May 2021-?) 🇨🇳

3871 Mars days, or 10+ Earth years, for Curiosity! There was hoo-ha on the 10 yr anniversary.

Lotsa misses from the Russians. 😜 Lots. It could be a punchline.

I didn't look at Mars orbiters, functional or otherwise. I imagine there's many, with some since the 60s.

Ripples and megaripples, not sand dunes!

A great video by Mars Guy explaining sand dunes and ripples, and especially "megaripples", the kind of formation #Perseverence is presently examining. The surface of this megaripple contains poorly sorted pebbles and grains that are larger than the regolith underneath it, making it an "armored" megaripple.
