Reminder that if you get an unexpected email or text about the status of a governmental, financial, or subscription account, DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS IN THE MESSAGE.

DO NOT CALL ANY NUMBERS IN THE MESSAGE.

Instead, look up the company or agency that claims to have sent the message. Use Google or DuckDuckGo or some other known, safe-ish search engine. If results look fishy, try more than one. If the website still looks fishy, look up the phone number. If that looks fishy, ask your kid or a friend to look it up for you and compare.

The point and the message is that scammers and con professionals are all over the Internet, constantly spamming us with fake messages meant to defraud us in various ways. So do due diligence and try to avoid getting scammed.

Also, use a password manager if you can possibly figure out how to use one. And use separate (ideally random) passwords for each website you use. And enable multifactor authentication for your password manager, and use a complex passphrase for it too, not a simple password.

If someone calls claiming to be from your financial institution - even if they sound very much like what you'd expect from a bank and say that it's an urgent matter - ask them for a case reference number and tell them you'll call them back at the 1-800 number on the bank's website.

The fraudsters are really out in force at the moment.

General 2FA Tips:
- Using an authenticator app is generally a better idea than using SMS or phone text based 2FA. It's easier to spoof/attack SMSS based 2FA.
