Paint isnt cycling infrastructure.

Im having a cracker time commuting to work with the close passes. This mornings first was due to a 'cycle lane' or shall we say the gutter becoming a turning lane at an intersection. This means drivers have poor options for safely passing. Should the driver of the 4x4 slammed on his brakes to turn behind me or should he close passed me to overtake? Neither option is ideal.

I was going to just make this video of a safe pass maneuver by a driver this morning, but had the unfortunate addition of an illegal pass later in my commute. The truck has plenty of space available to give the legal 1.5m.

The corolla driver should be given a medal for slowing and waiting to pass after the traffic island rather than trying to dive in front of me as drivers usually do.

Attempting to dodge washouts, gravel, debris and the bogan glitter of a 'bike lane' Im riding in a lane, however looking at the image Im not taking the lane fully, which leaves the door open to drivers passing dangerously.

Going forward I will take that lane more, in an attempt to dissuade drivers from passing between me and traffic islands. I will also follow up with the dreaded Main Roads and local council about improving or at least maintaining the safety of the 'cycle lane'.

Dear drivers, if a cyclist is not in a 'cycle lane' (behind a painted line in the gutter) its because the 'cycle lane' is unsafe.

If the cyclist is in 'your lane' (the road) next to a traffic island, (now here's the important bit), DONT FUCKING TRY AND PASS THEM.

a human life is worth more than 5 seconds of 'inconvenience'.

So follow up from my bus parked in cycle lane, I had emailed the company and got a response back. Operations supervisor replied with an email that hung the driver out for it rather than apologize from a company perspective. That’s 2022 work finished. A year of challenges. The biggest was one I set for myself. I chose to reduce my carbon footprint by riding to work. I hadn’t been on a bike since high school but undaunted I picked up a 2nd hand hybrid bike. 16kg of bike plus panniers, loaded with a ‘gaming’ laptop (big screen, big battery and charger), lunch and a change of clothes.
I started out on bike paths and back roads, got a puncture on a trial run that lead to an ongoing series of punctures over the first 6 weeks of term. I wasn’t sure if this cycling thing was going to work out.
I kept at it, getting more used to the roads and sought smoother and shorter routes. I soon found that #perthdrivers don’t like to share the roads so I picked up #cycliq front & rear cameras. I switched to a backpack for better aero and bought a road bike.
I rode 5769 km this year, 4k of that on the hybrid. Not bad for not riding since high school.
I saved 1.6t of CO2 from not driving to work & gained a firsthand experience of how car centric culture kills cities & communities. I did this to see if I could, I won’t go back to car centric life and happy to champion transit solutions that are for the many and not the few.

When you snap a picture of the perfect example of unsafe cycling conditions:

Close pass from van and broken glass across the shoulder (no stopping zone) of the road in front of cyclist.

This road seems to do drivers heads in, they simply cannot wait a few seconds to go around safely because there are trees in the islands of the road.

I live on a residential street that has 2 child care centres on it, as well as a large shopping centre all in close proximity. It is a bus route as well as the access point for #coles trucks. The amount of #perthdrivers who use the street as a rat run, or high speed show off is high.

I would love to see all #perth suburb speed limits dropped to 40 with permanent 30 zones around schools/child care and high pedestrian areas like the shopping centre.

I should start with contacting the local council, but I want to jump straight to #tacticalurbanism with traffic calming islands, and crosswalks
