"If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)" is a #protestSong written by #PeteSeeger and #LeeHays. It was written in 1949 in support of the #ProgressiveMovement, and was first recorded by #theWeavers, a #folkMusic quartet composed of Seeger, Hays, #RonnieGilbert, and #FredHellerman. It was a #10 hit for #PeterPaulAndMary in 1962 and then went to #3 a year later when recorded by #TriniLopez in 1963.

"Black and White" is a song written in 1954 by #DavidIArkin and #EarlRobinson. It was first recorded by #PeteSeeger featuring an African-American child, in 1956 from the album Love Songs for Friends & Foes. The most successful recording of the song was the #pop version by #ThreeDogNight in #1972, when it reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Easy Listening charts. Billboard ranked it as the number 63 song for 1972.

"Little Boxes" is a song written and composed by #MalvinaReynolds in 1962. The song was first released by her friend, #PeteSeeger, in 1963, and became his only charting single in January 1964. The song is a #socialSatire about the development of #suburbia, and associated #conformist #middleclass attitudes. It mocks suburban #tractHousing as "little boxes" of different colors "all made out of #tickytacky", and which "all look just the same".

"Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" is a #folkSong written by American singer-songwriter #PeteSeeger in 1955. Inspired lyrically by the traditional #Cossack folk song "Koloda-Duda", Seeger borrowed an Irish melody for the music, and published the first three verses in #SingOut magazine. Additional verses were added in May 1960 by #JoeHickerson, who turned it into a circular song. Its rhetorical "where?".

Today in Labor History May 3, 1919: Pete Seeger was born, Patterson, New York. He started his folk singing career in the 1940s, with the Almanac singers. This group included Woodie Guthrie, Cisco Houston and Bess Lomax Hawes. They sang about industrial unionism and racial inclusiveness. In the 1950s, they reconstituted as the Weavers. However, they were blacklisted by the McCarthyites. As a result, radio stations stopped playing their records and their bookings were cancelled. Seeger was a member of the Communist Party USA, but left it in 1949. He was also an early backer of Bob Dylan until he went electric and Seeger threatened to unplug him at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
