Confession time #today. While my carefully curated posts might give the impression that I'm a caring person, I often experiment on my pets.

For example, I wanted to see how Nicodemus (pictured here) would react if I offered him a TINY bit of wasabi paste.

Just a dot of it, on a fingertip.

Nicodemus, a usually gentle and civilised young person, grabbed my finger with both hands and devoured the wasabi so greedily that I could feel his teeth on my skin Unheard of! He's the most well behaved of rattoes, usually.

He had a wild look in his eye, afterward. I still can't quite believe it, and haven't repeated the experiment.

You never know. I don't want to trigger an origin story.

#Today the #rats got to know the wet dig box. That's a big plastic bin with some damp soil and dried grass.

I plan to grow things in the bin, and hope that they'll enjoy digging through it all.

Rats are super cautious so for today all they did was inspect it. Lots of peering and sniffing happened.

I put a pillow inside the bin so they could get into it without having to jump down, and Nicodemus and Jasper both ventured inside.

Rats NEVER go into any space without ensuring that they have an exit route. You know how a cat will pause in a door before going out? Rats will dash through a door, turn round, dash back, turn round, and dash out again. Always checking if they can go back to safety before they go on.

As before, Frankie was the first to investigate the alien object (that's her, the cute brown rat peering down into the bin in the photo).

I wrote today!
It's the best feeling.

Jasper and Nicodemus, two of my rats, helped me. They hopped across my lap, stepped on the keyboard, and cleaned up some spilled tea. They also spilled some tea. So. It all came out in the wash, so to speak.

Yesterday I took my two oldest rats to the vet. Maurice, the oldest, is 2.5 years old and quite fragile so I hesitated to expose him to the stress of a vet visit, but he and his friend Frankie both needed a checkup. Rats don't usually live much over 2 years so Maurice is a venerable old dude.

Vet is very happy with both of them so that's a relief!

Maurice survived the trip. #today he is getting extra cuddles from my youngest rat, Saffy. She's deeply asleep right on top of him. Both of them totally blissed out. Rats love company, the more, the squashier, the better.

A contemplative Frankie, relaxing now that she's torn up all the newspaper shreds in the cage and got everything just right. She's a much better housekeeper than I am.

One of the funny things about #rats is how squishy they are. They're like little pillows of fat and muscle with their skeletons floating inside.

This picture on the left is Jasper #today, looking very round and innocent.

He's actually pretty slim when stretched out, and muscular too. He's by far the bravest of my rats, and a really friendly little guy. He likes adventuring and exploring and doesn't seem to have much fear at all.

He doesn't need to dominate other rats, in fact he relentlessly submits until they give up and act friendly to him.

The picture on the right is him as a baby shortly after meeting my older rats, he was in there and snuggling with no trouble.

I love that picture, both Jasper and Frankie look so contented and happy.

#today I'm having some success in getting the budgies to eat their chopped up vegetables.

They seem to like their food dish to be high up near the ceiling instead of inside the cage.

Moments after this picture was taken Carlos (on the left) jumped right onto my phone and obscured the lens with his tail feathers.

That round thing with the grid in the background is a heater for the birds, will soon have to switch it on again as the weather gets cooler.

Saffy, last night, reacting to bear sounds from the show we were watching. Those whiskers were working overtime!
I think her eyesight is very poor, she does this thing where she rocks from side to side peering intently at things in the distance.

I usually take the #rats out of their cage before I clean, but #today I just worked around them. The three boys kept climbing on me, but Saffy and Frankie slept through the whole thing.

They must have been aware of me dismantling and redecorating their home but it didn't seem to bother them at all.
