I am very happy to announce that my talk "Protecting your data with Patroni and pgBackRest" has been accepted to the very first PGDay MED. :postgresql:
It will also be a first time for me to visit Malta.
I hope you can come as well.

mmh using #pgbackrest and 8 processes, it takes 4.5 h for the synapse db full backup – with 12 it takes 3 h (i need to reevaluate if i want it to be that cpu intensive)
with zst on level 9 to creates 239.3GB (orig 1196.6GB)
...yes, of course thats matrix. what else? :D
piping the postgres dump into restic took longer than 7 h already 😅 – however while it also uses zst, the dump (custom format) only is at 170G hmm
hmm a #pgbackrest full backup is quite heavy
edit: might have misinterpreted something… its still high even without it running and it’s not the only host where it looks too much - possibly something i should investigate
Last Friday, I had the chance to talk about #PostgreSQL backups and my favorite tool (aka. @pgBackRest) at the #FOSDEM PGDay.
Here are the slides of that "Deep dive into the #pgBackRest world" session 👇

i am looking around for more efficient (but ideally not cost increasing) ways for backing up the largest databases of tchncs... there are a few tools on my list already but just now ive stumbled upon https://pgbackrest.org/ which sounds quite interesting. any opinions based on experience with the tool? #selfhosted #pgbackrest
Again this morning
after updating the system (for applying application update mainly)
#pgbackrest have been updated too. And this time wal shipping was broken... (the backup server wasn't updated).
Now i'm locking pgbackrest version to avoid this stress in the future
(FS was at 25% at start and fill the filesystem to 65 % when I start looking).
Kudos to @controlc to point me to https://www.robustperception.io/reduce-noise-from-disk-space-alerts/
I was in the process to put this up (and that's that trigger me)

#sysadmin rant of the morning :
I hate then #pgbackrest is updated.
if pgbackrest is not on the same version on the backup and all pg cluster server, it stop working.
and you need to restart pgbackrest and all server too...
otherwise it works very nice...
I'm start to think i must lock the version of pgbackrest... i don't like that
