This is intriguing: phage therapy induces bacterial resistance but also reduced virulence.

So clinical benefit post-phage could also stem from bacterial attenuation rather than just eradication.

Question is how sustainable this effect may be.

'While recent events have provided a painful reminder of the very bad viruses that prey on us, Tom Ireland’s “The Good Virus” is a colorful redemption story for the oft-neglected yet incredibly abundant phage, and its potential for quelling the existential threat of antibiotic resistance, which scientists estimate might cause up to 10 million deaths per year by 2050.'

are viruses that infect bacteria and hijack the cell machinery to replicate. Phages exhibit two main types of lifestyle.
The lytic cycle involves the expression of phage nucleic acids, leading to the production of both the phage genome and proteins that will be assembled into new virions. At the end of a lytic cycle, the host cell is lysed, and the progeny phages are released.

The first study using to treat infections is underway with scientists reporting a preliminary but encouraging early success case.

"You are considered clinically and biologically cured," said Victoria Marshall as she read a text message from her doctor on the latest test results.
It brought her to tears.

"Well, I can have my life back. It's been really hard."

Happy to say I defended my dissertation "Methods and complexity in phage-bacteria ecology and evolution"!

Much thanks to all those who supported me throughout my PhD.

I'm glad to be sticking around the Turner Lab for another year as a post-doc to continue my work on multispecies phage-bacteria communities

A bearded fellow in front of a lectern. Their laptop has a flagellated sticker on it. They are presumably saying something like "check-out the cool being done on the BASEL collection, what do you want to do with it?"

The large projector screen has a slide on it titled: A field guide for describes all major groups (and lots of new findings). There are figures from a 2011 paper with EM, phylogenies, etc displayed (linked above).
