9 yo had a headache yesterday so I read him a story that I thought wouldn't make him laugh: San Andreas by Alistair MacLean... a gritty WW2 espionage-at-sea novel. (Spoiler: the Germans did it.) However he found something to laugh about on the second page when the ship's engineer swore so much the captain had to hold the phone away from his ear for a minute.
