How long has external funding (vs., say, a research university supporting its own research through internal budget allocations) been the norm in #academia ?

Forever? Or is this a meaningful shift in how the existential project of living #research is conceived, one that externalizes away from the university some obligations, and internalizes (and largely invisiblizes) some others?

Another way of asking this might be, "When did BYO funding become the norm for faculty hires?"

Sometimes I can barely believe how lucky I am to have the #PhD supervisors I have.

They trust me. They reassure me when I have doubts. They give me the time I need. They don't judge.

Sometimes I think, "that's almost sus". And then I realize it's just normal.

Of course doing a PhD is hard but somehow they make it almost a healing experience for me.
