@Rihilism
Sounds like a male. They scope out and defend territory, watching for emerging females. They'll fly right up into your face, challenging you. It's all bluff. Males can't sting.
Females can sting, but they're too busy getting all the work done. They have no time for us.

Anecdotal, but I’ve been around the #BC #interior block a few times at this point —> #plant #phenology seems super far ahead this year.
Like stuff I’d usually see happening in late- #August is already apparent before the end of #July.
Anyone else noticing this?

@Former_Child_Star How unusual this is will depend on what Sophora species you've got. The Cook Strait kowhai, Sophora molloyi, which is a common shrubby kowhai planted in gardens, typically starts flowering in May and June. Others start flowering a bit later, but having some open flowers in July isn't too unusual.
It's certainly something worth keeping an eye on though.

New Phytologist "Harnessing herbaria to advance plant phenology research under global change" https://nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/nph.19088
by # NicoleKarlis in #Salon:
"The study, led by scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Michigan State University, found that birds are producing fewer chicks when they start breeding too early or too late in the spring season. This type of research is known as phenology, or the study of periodic events in biological life cycles. As climate change results in earlier springlike weather, birds have been unable to adapt their reproductive readiness."

@empiricism that’s for sure. I was thinking more about the long term #ecological consequences though. Like how is this massive #forestfire season affecting #nutrient cycles? #population dynamics and #wildlife behaviours? How will the chemicals in smoke alter the #phenology of #plants ? #Migration ? Landscape configurations and habitat #connectivity ? That kind of thing. :ablobeyes:

Button Wrinklewort (Rutidosis leptorrhynchoides) still flowering in June. Usually starts around September in Melbourne, and only goes until summer gets hot and dry - perhaps January. This wet year it never stopped! I wonder if it will affect it's production of new stems and flowers in Spring.

This might be the first year out of nearly 37 that I understand experientially what midsummer refers to.
I was conditioned to believe (I'm sure the American school calendar had a big role) that summer *begins* on the solstice. But the more I pay attention the more I realize that the solstice really is the *middle* of the summer, that delicate point where the seaons pause briefly before continuing on their way. It's a very different and strange experience.
