The polyphagous fall armyworm is a significant in its native range, the Americas. It has spread to Africa and Asia and has become a devastating pest of and other crops like sorghum or cotton. A new component has been described which significantly improves trapping of male moths - article in Pest Management Science (2023, vol. 79, issue 7, pp. 2831-2839) by Ahmed M. Locusts are terrifying, particularly when they are swarming. Their ability to decimate the agricultural output of a region has been shown time and again.

One aspect of their "gregarious" swarming phase is their competitive cannibalism of each other.

Now, scientists have genetically identified the pheromone compound used to prevent this, possibly opening new control methods.
