In 1782 #PhilipAstley built the first #circus in #France on Rue du Faubourg du Temple in #Paris. The ‘Amphitheatre Anglais’ or ‘Cirque d’Astley’ as it was also known has long disappeared with famous Parisian #nightclub the ‘Gibus Club’ now standing in its place.

#PhilipAstley is considered the father of the modern circus. He was a Military man, equestrian master & circus owner who established an Amphitheatre near the Stangate in #Lambeth ~1773 It became the celebrated Astley’s Royal Amphitheatre until it was closed & demolished in 1893

The #OlympicTheatre was built in 1806 by #PhilipAstley (partly from a French Warship) for public exhibitions of Horsemanship. Originally named the #OlympicPavilion, Philip Astley sold it to Robert Elliston in 1813 who refurbished it & renamed it the Little Drury Lane #theatre
