Louis (Louis Garrel) leaves his wife & their young daughter for another woman Claudia (Anna Mouglalis). Louis and Claudia are both struggling actors. He thinks moody Claudia is the one that he truly loves and reject all the other advances that are put on him. He is committed. But she isn't happy and their poverty is crushing her spirit. Holed up in their small attic apartment and without a job, Claudia secretly looks for a better man who can provide for her. Delicately balanced & beautifully put together, #PhilippeGarrel's #Jealousy is very much akin to old bw romance of French New Wave. There are hardly any coverages, most scenes are shot on a single take & life-like. Garrel, a forever romantic, has never moved on like his contemporaries but has faithfully stuck in his brand of self-reflexive filmmaking w/his trusty actors who are all very on point. Sexy, I-just-smoked-10,000-cigarettes, Mouglalis is great as a man-eater (yet not a caricature). It's a delicious stuff.

Jeanne is in emotional & physical shambles. She just left her live-in boyfriend. She can't believe it is over. W/a luggage in tow, she rings at the door of her professor father, Gilles. Somewhat awkwardly, she is introduced to his girlfriend Adriane who is about the same age as she. As Jeanne slogs through post-breakup phase, the two girls bonds over their love for Gilles. Unlike Jeanne, who is going through experiencing the first big love of her life & its aftermath, Adriane seems to be in control of the situations - unlike Jeanne who was pursued and finally relented then fell hard, Adriane was the aggressive one. L'Amant d'un jour, as usual, shot on bw 16mm without any bells & whistles, #philippeGarrel continues his own delicate, micro melodrama in varying degrees and it’s lovely. You gotta give him credit for his consistency. At 70, without wordy dialog or help of cigarette and alcohol in portraying young love and heartache, he gets it right emotionally. #loverforaday #esthergarrel
