All nouns are capitalised in German, but not in English. It used to be a thing, as you can see from reading old laws like the Vagrancy Act 1824. When did capitalising nouns stop being convention in English? #languages #English #philology

A peculiar thing happened to me today. I was asked if I want to write a doctoral dissertation about Russian-language poetry of Israel.
I wasn't planning to go full philology, and the offer has its caveats (the scholarship is not guaranteed, haha), but that made me think, and now I'm considering the problem I would like to research, if I decide to go this road. Anyway, feeling some kind of panic.

#philology is an amazing aspect when it comes to writing, languages & authorship.
It resonates strongly with a curious mind who might ask the following of any book:
- is the claimed author truly the one who wrote it?
- do publishers & editors play a role in modifying the content? If yes, by how much? If yes, why did they modify it?
- do copies exist of a manuscript signed by the author (or scribe) him/herself?
(these questions are from a textual criticism angle)

An experiment in non-segmental metathesis
"Wasp" developed from earlier "waps". The apparent movement/exchange of /p/ and /s/ can be modelled as a gradual change using morphing. In this spectrographic video clip, the pale valley around t = 15 is the low-intensity [p] closure, which progressively "fills up" with sibilance, while at the same time, the sibilant ridge at about t = 30 descends to a valley, the new, now later [p] closure.

Language shows us the psychological development of history. Word cognates tell us that at one time, seemingly different concepts now were once connected for peoples of that time. In ancient Britain, you were “kind” to your “kin,” and your “king” (kuning/cyning) was just a family member selected for leadership of a small clan. Contrasting with now, where kindness is a universal value we ideally show to anyone, and a king is a tyrannical ruler out of touch with his subjects. There are shifting concepts of equality here, but themes of equality (or lack thereof) exist in all these words. Who should we relate to and why? How has that changed? The words themselves reflect the answers. #etymology #Philology

Hello, social.coop! I'm joining this Mastodon instance because I want to be part of conversations about #cooperatives, #commons, the #solidarityeconomy, #foss, and the #fediverse that are happening here. I'm interested in how these things relate to tech work, and I want to learn from cooperative projects worldwide.
I work as a programmer, and I live in North Carolina. Another big interest of mine is languages, in both the #plt and #linguistics & #philology senses.

Actually we called it “fieno” (Italian) because we were #bilingual for a while, and this is one of the few Italian words that stuck around in our family vernacular 🥲

Adam Benkato and I have launched Berkeley Working Papers in Middle Iranian Philology. We will publish short & longer articles or research reports on the philology and epigraphy of Middle Iranian languages (Middle Persian, #Parthian, #Bactrian, #Sogdian, #Chorasmian, #Khotanese). We warmly invite our colleagues to contribute to the #journal.
We start issue 0 with a manifesto where I show a possible direction for the journal by discussing #Nietzsche’s views on #philology.

Logion 43 closes the set of dialogue, with the disciples inquiring after the nature of IS, who lashes out: "You are identical to those damn Judeans who worship their god in words yet not in deeds, and fail to see the forest through the trees of what their own deeds in actuality are comprised of"
