In other words, translation is easier among concepts which more readily hook onto the actual world, not just the exclusively human cultural world. Entertaining a diversity of thought in this way is thus tremendously helpful in separating worldly wheat from cultural chaff.

Eric Mandelbaum won the Stanton Prize. 🎉

Eric thought Noam Chomsky might attend, which helps explains Eric talking about , whether it’s getting worse, and the (bounded) rationality of how we consume it.

It was very Eric—i.e., very Fodorian and very funny.

Chaz Firestone’s introduction of Eric was immaculate.

You can find Eric’s work (including recent ventures into empirical research) on gScholar: scholar.google.com/citations?u

This Thursday I’m participating in a panel on Simon Hewitt’s recent book on Negative Theology and Philosophical Analysis, at the EUARE2023 Congress, here in St Andrews.

If you’re in the area, come along. If you’d like to get a hint of what I’m talking about, you’re in luck: consequently.org/presentation/

3 questions about language use for :

1.what do you consider to be the difference in meaning between *in virtue of* & *because of* (eg 'the glass broke in virtue of being / because it was dropped')?
2. What determines your choice of either?
3. Do you know of published sources that discuss this?

Thx for your insights.

Having studied for a bit, The Idea Theory of Meaning a la still seems most plausible to me, counter arguments being quite weak imho. Theories such as Two Dimensionalism and Possible Worlds Semantics are exceptionally overwrought

Reading 's (OUP, 2014), which I look forward to teaching in the spring. Such a great, meticulously crafted, insightful . I'm learning tons, not just about the meaning of 'good,' 'ought,' 'reason,' etc., but also, I hope, about how to think about issues of the relevant sort.

I don’t think that is possible to make up a totally formal and logical language because probably our ambiguous language has been evolutionarily selected for a proper adaptation to the world that itself has constructed

Any or friends want to weigh in on this? Why is it tolerated when philosophers approximate Saussure's signifier as "sound", when he specifically warns not to do this. Signifiers are sound PATTERNS (aka sound image). They are psychological not physical. Both and do this. This distinction cuts deep because it helps justify Saussure's whole langue program. Shall no one take Derrida to task over this??
