'moral injury' rather than burnout is driving public school teachers from the profession

No, you do not have to move to the suburbs just because you have a kid starting school! Amazing but true! Ask me how!
(I swear to god, the way the Inquirer talks about #PHLed is a SIGNIFICANT part of the problem)
ETA here's the article: https://www.inquirer.com/real-estate/housing/philadelphia-real-estate-mortgage-rates-not-selling-renting-20230712.html
Goodbye, Chester Arthur. Hello, Marian Anderson. This Philly elementary school has a new name. #Phled
I have said over and over again that curriculum is pointless in #PHLed if they CANNOT get their shit together as far as providing basic services: safe buildings with normal start times (bc the busses run) and enough teachers in front of the classroom (who don't get leveled out in October)
Until they can handle the basics, this is like being the Black Knight in Monty Python and spending $70 million on... band aids

The I-95 rebuild is kinda bumming me out because it shows that WE CAN DO THINGS FAST WHEN WE CARE ABOUT THEM
But Philly is still sending kids to dilapidated #PHLed schools with asbestos and no AC or safe drinking water

Rachel Cammisa-Cantz, Carla Russell, and Wilma Hernández are among the winners of the 2023 Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.
Here’s what motivates them, in their own words. #Phled
God it sucks to spend nearly a decade of your life fighting for something and then watch it go down the tubes in real time #PHLed
The Philly school system’s annual report card is in. It shows big drops in academics and attendance. #Phled
Here's an idea, how about I dress normally and donate $20 directly to the #PHLed school of my choice instead
I didn't start out as "Education Activist Stephanie King" who got quoted in the Inky & wrote op-eds. I was just some pain-in-the-ass mom who was mad that my kids' #PHLed school kept getting run into the ground by cuts & underfunding.
Helen Gym's office was the ONLY one who ever responded to my complaints. Because of her direct intervention, my kids' school has:
-safe drinking water
-air conditioning
-an art teacher
I've run into her at countless protests & BoE meetings. She's the real deal.
Philly folks: If you've been following me for a long time, then it's probably no secret who I'm voting for. But if you care about #PHLed public schools, Helen Gym is the ONLY candidate worth voting for.
If you want to read what other candidates have to say on education, here you go, but I've been doing this close to a decade & I haven't seen them doing diddly-squat for our schools. But Helen has been there, fighting alongside public school parents, every step of the way. https://philadelphia.chalkbeat.org/2023/4/13/23681787/philadelphia-mayor-mayoral-election-2023-candidates-education-issues-voter-guide
Diana Garcia went from being the child of undocumented parents to star principal at Willard Elementary.
The work is one of the hardest things she's done in her life, but also the most rewarding. #Phled
Frankford High School will remain closed for the rest of the school year, with the discovery of more damaged asbestos throughout the building. #Phled
A growing number of Philly parents speak languages not covered by the school district’s current interpretation service — creating barriers to the simple act of enrolling children in school to hearing from the school nurse. #Phled
It's the guns. IT. IS. THE. GUNS. Back in the day, HS beef ended with maybe a fistfight after school. Now we've got a disgruntled former student shooting up a school yesterday and a #PHLed student shot over nothing on their way to school. OTHER COUNTRIES DON'T HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THIS. STOP SACRIFICING OUR CHILDREN ON THE ALTAR OF THE 2ND AMENDMENT.

I am SO embarrassed for this city that parents couldn't handle letting in bright kids from underprivileged #PHLed schools who still had good grades and scores but struggle slightly bc they hadn't had all the same advantages.
(Full disclosure: my kid went to Masterman for a year and left bc in her words "it's racist and the teachers are mid")
Honored to be speaking at this year's #PHLed Parent Summit put on by Our City Our Schools, Parents United for Public Education, and the Home & School Council! I'll be talking about the importance of building solidarity with neighborhood schools and I'm stoked to be on a program with such notable keynote speakers. Free & open to the public. Come through!

Interesting how when it was Science Leadership Academy, the #PHLed District ponied up to rent space in the synagogue right across the street and let them into 440, but now the Building 21 students are expected to haul themselves across town?
https://www.inquirer.com/news/building-21-mansion-asbestos-relocation-parents-20230304.html
Let me rephrase this: #Masterman doesn't actually know how to teach, only how to take well-prepared children of privilege and polish them up. By giving a chance to the brightest students from even under-resourced #PHLed schools, they don't know what to do with them. Then a #Penn professor, Mitchell Orenstein, comes out and says a bunch of stuff that's basically "I'm not a racist but..."
