Once again, my explanation to the "fraud centre"(*) pretending to be Amazon that the $1,400 foreign gift card purchase was for oral sex and my corresponding request that the criminal on the other end make good on the deal was not met with a positive response.

Anything I can do to waste these bugger's time and make their day a little more miserable is fair game.

* A perfectly accurate name BTW, just the reverse of what victims expect

Banks need to stop investigating scams as a single crime. But look at them from a big data perspective.

While a scammer who gives a fake employee number to convince their mark they really work for a company will still give the same number over and over again just because it takes too much effort to come up with a new one every time. While this fake number would not identify a company employee I could be used to identify a scammer on multiple scams.

If we can get enough recordings of scammers that information can be used to find them.

Think about it.. phone scams in order to be profitable need to have as many people calling as possible. This means it’s basically a call centre. This also means they suffer from the same weakness of a call centre..

* Minimal training
* Agents read from a script
* Unreasonable KPIs
* Management unable to listen to every call until after the fact
* High stress for low pay (You think the agents get paid well?)

Now apply those weakness to methods of taking them down. So a reasonable trained agent who is set up to cause havoc to a scammer could do a lot of damage.

The #phishing calls have resumed. They are likely targeting #NovaScotia now .
Just before Christmas they called every 4 minutes for Hours, hoping I'd pick-up when I saw a local number on the CallID. You can't trust #CallerID. I've had my home phone disconnected due to the repetition of these auto dialers.
Be Alert, and warn anyone who might be venerable, like your parents?

I study scams!

To help prevent scams have a code that randomly changes that can only be accessed by the customer account page and customer service team. If a phone agent needs to contact a client they must provide the correct number to the client first.

The second code appears for the client to provide the agent! The second code can not be accessed until the first one is verified by the agent on the back end.
2FA is good however it needs to be in both directions. The other issue with 2FA is that it’s intimidating to seniors. Even the text “Do not give to anyone” is confusing because they think the scammer is the bank. Or they write the 2FA code down thinking it’s a new password.
“The agent code is 42427 “ does that match? “Yes - No” is a simple question. (Clicking no would trigger alerts)
While this will not prevent all scams it will help reduce phone scams pretending to be bank agents.

@richmurrills Help your elders by setting up their phones to only ring through if the number is in their contacts list. Add all their doctors and pharmacists to their contacts. Then set up a voicemail that says, “You’ve reached so-and-so. I don’t accept calls from anyone I don’t know. If you are a legitimate caller , please leave a message.”

It looks like the "expensive phone ordered at amazon" scammers are using fake Irish numbers (+353) today.

Two so far today - the first ID'ing as +3531598525 hung up after a couple of seconds of silence, but the second claiming to be from +3532867338 had the whole voice message in slightly robotic, hard to pin down accent.

When I teach seniors how to avoid scams I take all of the Tech out of the conversation. ALL of it. Any mention of tech and the entire session is wasted as the fear of tech is stronger than the fear os being scammed.

However, what I do is show them how to spot when the scam is working on them. strong emotions are key to a phone scam

"If you feel angry"
"If you feel excited"
"If you feel afraid"
"If you feel pressured"
"If you feel rushed"
