I don't usually recommend #theDaily or the #NYT, but I think they did a good job here discussing the long-term impacts of moving away from #phonics as the primary means of teaching children to read (and by association, pointing out how an idea that feels good isn't always the best in practice).

The author wrote two pieces in #TrueNorth , I see, the first about math and the second principally about reading. I have no real opinion about how best to teach math [0].

Regarding #reading however, the article states that the new curriculum is based upon #phonics and "background knowledge". My understanding is that both of those *are* best practices. What's on my mind? The US obsession with phonics.

Why is it the BOW of a ship, but a BOW in your hair? Why is it the BOUGH of a tree, but the tree is too TOUGH to cut down? Why is the tree too TOUGH to cut THROUGH? THOUGH we OUGHT to be completed cool with this as a way of teaching kids how to read.

@johnettesnuggs @meganisalanis couldn't agree more. To top it off, we have a large % of students who are EL and graduated ELs. So we have students up through high school who need #phonics to be explicitly and systematically taught.

The #phonics people are right.. I would rather, however, call it music. Humans are musical, and their music is language. Sometimes the score is #phonocentric, sometimes it isn't. Reading is fundamentally #musical, or so it has always been in my case - a second chance for those of us who can't sing in tune! As was apparently the case with Evelyn Waugh and Walter Benjamin. Our humanity is one long air.
