Here goes, my first attempt at : I'm professor of at , the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, where I head up the fledgling research group Media, Data, Museums. As a photo historian with a background in professional picture research, I study the labour, systems, technologies, and that underpin visual culture from the early 1800s to the present. More of a media antiquarian than a media archaeologist. I'm the author of Picture Research: The Work of Intermediation from Pre-Photography to Post-Digitization – forthcoming from MIT Press in June 2023. In real life I'm quite loud; on social media I'm usually quiet.
– oh yeah and (if I have to)

In 1897 , George Moore, a long-time and well-known Seattle photographer, went out for his usual early morning walk and never returned. He moved to Seattle in 1870 and ran a series of successful studios, but friends said that by the autumn of 1896 he was nearly destitute. Newspapers reported that probably he committed suicide in a nearby forest or the waters of Lake Washington, but his body was never found. His death remains a mystery to this day.

My life's purpose now is to attain the degree of proficiency of others in the past. For example, Seattle photographer Henry Peterson (1843-1911) was awarded titles of Captain of the Host in the Lodge of Perfection *and* Master of the Second Veil. He also apparently had cherubs make photographs for him. Someday, I, too, shall reach those heights!

Whenever I think that I might need to update my camera gear, I'm reminded of Washington photographer Darius Kinsey (1869-1945) and his carload of cameras, tripods, plate holders, and more. This is what it took in 1914 to produce some of his images of the logging industry in the early 20th century.

Here's a great photo made by . It shows Rooster Rock on the with Watkins' photo wagon and private rail car in the foreground. It was probably created about this time in November 1883, so it seems appropriate to share this now. getty.edu/art/collection/objec

Hello!

I'm @/slobogin on Twitter, but here I am now as well I guess! I mostly post about my writing and my podcasts in the medical humanities and the history of visual culture.

An article I wrote on plastic surgery photography, color, and British nationalism was just published in Visual Culture in Britain!

I don't know how to cross-post, so I'll do the same thread here. I saw on the bird app a museum sharing reflections on whether to display photographs of asylum patients from the (here twitter.com/Glenside_museum/st) but the reasoning didn't address the fact they're photographs! It just conflates sharing patients' histories with showing their portraits. Both things are not the same. We need to address the specific ethical issues of photographs

Hello! 🤗 I'm a historian of photography based in Leicester, UK, working on the history and ethics of medical photography, focusing on nineteenth century France.
My first book Picturing the Western Front examined how photographic practices shaped experiences during the First World War
I post mostly about but who knows how we're going to use this site!
