The new #PhotoID rules stopped 14,000 people #voting in the local elections in May 2023, and many more will have decided not to go to the polling station as they knew they didn't have acceptable photo ID.
It's an absolute scandal, undermining the democratic right to vote.

@TimWardCam No, I know you haven't. I am, at elections, a polling clerk. The point is, the evidence is that this 0.2% of people who were turned away for not having 'valid' #PhotoID and who did not subsequently return, were able to satisfactorily identify themselves to the polling clerk, in the majority of cases by presenting their polling card.
A sunny trip yesterday with Skipper Gus onboard the Mischief RIB https://www.dolphinspirit.co.uk Had some familiar #Dolphin fins including Scoopy, Flake, Foo, Porridge, Bonnie & Co with a bit of yacht bow-riding. Great to see Barbara and Rob out on #PhotoID survey from Aberdeen University Lighthouse Field Station at #cromartylighthouse

Worth having a look at the implications for the other two main players - the #Conservatives and the #LibDems. The #Conservatives appear to have relied on three things - public perception that their competence in government had improved from its previous nadir, #VoterSuppression through #PhotoID requirements and launching culture wars. The first two seem to have been successful to some extent while the last seems to have fallen flat entirely.

If you found people who were unable to vote in the #localelections because they didn't hold acceptabel #photoID please report your experience here directly to the govt department repsonsible.

The most likely culprit seems to have been #VoterSuppression through the introduction of #photoID requirements. The survey by #Survation shortly before polling day found that #Labour voters and people with lower incomes were significantly less likely to possess the relevant #id than voters as a whole. |On the basis I suggested that the could be an effect sufficient to reduce the #labour lead over the #Conservatives by 3%. On one measure this appears to have hapened.

while this large scale #voteDenial can seem temporary, until people will "get used" to new requirements, I'd call for people who might vote for election losers anyway, to intentionally attend to the need of removing the #photoID rule.
Ended up in tears after coming out of the polling station. It’s really stupid but #PhotoID at the polls made me feel dirty & bad & like I was doing something wrong for exercising civic rights.
So many things I’ll never forgive tories for, but this really ranks up there. #VoterID
Earlier today, I voted in a face-mask, as a protest against #PhotoID. It fell a bit flat when they let me.
My wife's just been down. They'd ticked that she'd already voted. She told them it was me and they believed her. Our electoral system is now officially wearing clown shoes but no face.
Voters leave in tears as Brits without ID turned away in local elections chaos
Voters said they'd seen elderly people turned away for not having the right ID with new rules requiring people to show a valid form of photo ID coming into force for the first time
#fascism #ToryCorruption #elections #photoid
Hey guess who just had to remove their mask and risk #covid exposure and significant worsening of existing #disability so that they could #vote under the #Tory government's new voter suppression #photoID rules.
#covid #disability #vote #tory #photoid
While the intention behind introducing photo ID for elections is clearly meant to benefit the Tories it could well have unintended consequences
And to be clear. Voter suppression is always wrong. Everyone should have the right to vote

Just voted & discovered that you can make an official complaint about requirement for photo ID at the vote - election officers will take down your complaint, name & address & pass it to the elections teams... so please folks - have your say!
Please, if you do this, be kind to election staff- they're doing a thankless task & are likely to get a lot of trouble today. If you have to wait when it's busy, wait kindly.
The election folks are not those at fault!!

I'm genuinely baffled why many British people have historically been resistant to ID cards, especially as an #EU national who has one. With the @Conservatives quietly bringing in #photoID for the next elections, can anyone help me understand the general problem with IDs in the UK? 23.04
