Oh! This is so cool!
I scanned in a couple old family photos this afternoon for my Mom. And... this was supposed to be a "quick" thing (hah, as if that would ever happen) but then.... ooh, shiny! Decided to play with Photoshop's new photo restoration/neural filters.
This is the 1st pic I did. The original, for full disclosure, was an 8x10 in really good shape - albeit about 70 years old. I was really happy with the state of the original... until I started applying filters...

Pic 2: with photo restoration filter
Pic 3: with colorization on top of that.

Astounding AI-assisted digital photo restoration employing Topaz Labs Photo AI DeNoise update (Strong v2 (beta))! The update to the software completely eliminated the moiré (left-sided image/panel) which generally required a fast fourier transform (FFT) in advanced imaging software.
Note: not to be confused with 'Generative AI' garnering so much attention in the news today.

Great amount of historical restored photos of trans men and trans women. Also the stories are very intriguing. Like this one:
"Think trans people are too mean about misgendering these days? From 1913 on, Zapatista colonel Amelio Robles Ávila (1889-1984) threatened to shoot anyone that called him a woman with his pistol. He lived openly as a man for 71 years and was supported by his family, peers, and government."
Everyday I learn great new things! 🎉 See the accompanying photos attached to this toot.

So I prefer taking photos to #PhotoRestoration, but I’m quite pleased with this one. Back in 1999 someone scanned a damaged original, printed a copy and then hung it on a wall that despite being in direct sunlight was damp all the time. Not the best raw materials…
This goes way back. This is a photo of my wife's parents. It was 1946. Her father had just returned from the war in Europe. They were married shortly thereafter.
My wife found this photo in her father's wallet when he passed in 1994. Both edges and the bottom had been folded in to fit the wallet.
She took the photo to a photo lab and had an 8x10 made from it. The lab cropped the image to eliminate the creases. We framed it and put it up.
In 2017 I came across the photo while I was busy scanning old family photos and film. I scanned it, restored it with Photoshop and printed a proper 8x10 which replaced the first one in the frame.
Fun Fact: In the car window behind them you can see a sticker with an "A" on it. That was for the wartime gas rationing system. The "A" classification was the lowest and permitted the owner to purchase about 4 gallons of gasoline per week.

Thinking of Dad on his birthday (98th). This March it will be 25 years since he died. I recently took a shot at restoring this photo of him.

Does anyone know about cleaning old photographs from the 1920's-40's? Mine are dusty and have a nicotine film on them. I tried rubbing one with a very-nearly-dry microfiber cloth. The spot on the cloth where I rubbed turned a nasty brown and the tactile stickiness on the photo came away. Afterwards I left the photo on the table overnight. It appears not to have sustained any damage. Is there anything I need to know before I continue?

Today I wanted to share some #photos from my #familyhistory . These are my great great #grandparents Jesse Alonzo Fifield and Clara Viola Strong Fifield. This photo was taken in southeast #Idaho sometime in the #1920s. My wife used Photoshop wizardry to do #photorestoration on the photo burned in the fire that burned my great grandma's house down.
A story from Clara's history. I'll reproduce it here as it was recorded, despite the use of the antiquated term "Indian" to refer to #NativeAmericans.
When Clara was born she had a birthmark on her lip. It was an enlarged blood vessel and blue in color. When Clara was older the birthmark was operated on and they tried to remove it, but enough of it came back that it was still visible.
The Strong family was friendly with all the Indians in the Springfield [Utah] area and none were ever turned away when they wanted food. One Indian became especially good friends with Ozias [Clara's father] and his family. The Indian called Ozias "Tan Tabby" (this is the way it sounded) and it meant "my friend." This Indian would carve whistles and other toys for the children. Years went by and the Strong children married and moved away.
Clara married Jesse Fifield and moved to Idaho. They finally settled in LaBelle, Idaho, where Jesse had a blacksmith shop. One day a band of Indians stopped to have a wagon fixed at the #blacksmith shop. Clara happened to be in the shop at that time. One Indian gave a loud yell and grabbed Clara's arm yelling, "Tan Tabby's girl, Tan Tabby's girl." The old Indian was happy after all those years to find the daughter of his old friend. He recognized her by the birthmark on her lip.

Am in the process of archiving and restoring my grandparents old photo collection. Wondered if anyone knows of any groups or hashtags to follow for people interested in #OldPhotos #PhotoRestoration #FamilyHistory etc. I don’t think I can be the only one on here to find this interesting but am struggling to find a corner of the the fediverse for it as of yet. Here are a couple I have worked on so far (#photographyBW)

Hello, figured I would join in the #introduce posts to try and find some people to connect with. I am based in the south west of England and don’t get out much (mobility issues). I am mainly kept sane through #crochet #CrossStitch #books and tea (though i also dabble in some other crafts and have started looking a #PhotoRestoration). My cat Purl pretty much rules the household.
