Weekend 🦐🦠

Not all fix carbon through . Some (lithoautotrophs) use the minerals leached from rock for energy. Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans metabolizes pyrite with oxygen to produce sulfites and sulfuric acid. This causes Acid Mine Drainage in that drain old coal mines. This *very acidic discharge is oxidized as it contacts air, turning iron bright orange (rust), and contains many metals.

AAAS: "Heat could halt photosynthesis." In a worst-case outcome with rising temperatures, Global Mean Surface Temperature reaching 3.9ºC, tropical forest photosynthesis may grind to a halt. "Researchers used an instrument on the International Space Station to estimate peak canopy temperatures between 2018 and 2020, + also gathered data with ground-level sensors attached to individual leaves. "Already, 0.01% of tree leaves surpass a critical temperature at which photosynthesis begins to fail, about 46.7°C." Study is published in Nature this week. But I suspect we'd have many more issues than this one if the world gets that warm. It's already a hot time in the old town tonight.

I've been warning about the temperature limits of for some time now.

These are hard limits based on chemistry and physics.

Higher CO2 levels in the air have reduced the global rate because they have also made the drier. This has reduced its slowing effect on .

Perspectives call for engineering to increase carbon capture and increase food production, for using to enhance climate resilience in plants & garnering public support, to consider how the of cropland soils could be manipulated to accelerate soil , and for more & better public–private partnerships in research

What are the most efficient plants for capturing CO2?

Google tells me it is the oak tree, but that considers the long term balance and assumes that the plant is just left growing, storing carbon as wood.

I am asking instead for a plant that would be periodically harvested, the tissues being turned into charcoal by oxygen-free pyrolysis and buried.

ā€œUsing statistics on the distribution of the diatoms and other phytoplankton with the extra membrane throughout the global ocean, the researchers extrapolated that this boost in efficiency from the VHA membrane protein accounts for almost 12% of Earth’s atmospheric oxygen. It also contributes between 7% and 25% of all the oceanic carbon fixed each year. That’s at least 3.5 billion tons of carbon — almost four times as much as the global aviation industry emits annually. At the high end of the researchers’ estimate, VHA could be responsible for tying up as much as 13.5 billion tons of carbon a year.ā€
