The Fluvial Geomorphology Equivalent Of ‘Ontogeny Recapitulates Phylogeny’?
--
usgs.gov/3d-elevation-program <-- USGS’s 3DEP’s open data for elevation
--
This is a ‘quick and dirty’ visualisation I made the other day with 3DEP iFSAR data to get a better sense of the fluvial geomorphology up in this area of NE Alaska near Kaktovik/Gordon, it is amazing what pops...
Lay over some hydrology vectors, some of the underlying geology boundaries, etc - and the landforms become much easier to understand in terms of origin and development - the geomorphic/hydrologic/erosional/geologic/vegetative/etc equivalent of biology's “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny”?

On the surface, this looks like nitpicking, but in reality it is a revolution in the tree of life. Because they lack neuromuscular cells, sponges were classically presented as the sister group to all metazoans. But the sister group could well be the ctenophores, which leads to two scenarios: either several independent evolutions of neuromuscular cells, or a deletion in the sponges.

Hey Mastodon! Consider yourself lucky, because you got a : Mathieu Faure-Brac, the paleophysiologist!
➡️ @mgfb ⬅️
Mathieu has worked on the thermophysiology of Pseudosuchia 🐊 (old crocs) with isotopical geochemistry⚛️ and paleohistology🦴 during his PhD, and he's a expert.
Spend a little over 30mn with him and you'll suddenly learn about obscure lore📖, weird facts and forbidden phylogenetic methods 😱
Please welcome him :D !

`We establish a new family, Micrelapidae fam. nov., for Micrelaps and assign Brachyophis to this family based on cranial osteological synapomorphy. We estimate that Elapoidea originated in the early Eocene and rapidly diversified into all the major lineages during this epoch. Ecological opportunities presented by the post-Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction event may have promoted the explosive radiation of elapoid snakes`

(Not giving a link, as quote reposts considered unmastodonish)
I just found a non-ironic discussion starting with: "What is the environmental impact of running Bayesian models as compared to frequentist ones?"
I'm really puzzled:
Maybe we should start to encourage students to use C++ (or Rust if you're a fan) instead of Python, by saying It makes science more green?
Establish a ethical committee branch to approve bootstrap replicate quotas?
Or just start to frown upon numeric methods in general?

Well, if you consider my irony inappropriate, please tell in comments. But now I really feel something in between dread and urge to laughter TBH.
