There is an unknown hazard of life coaching:

Half your friends are life coaches
And they have awesome offerings
And you want to take them all to support your friends
But you also know you have a tendency to be busy learning, learning, learning
So you can avoid doing, doing, doing your own work

Is disrespect at work contributing to your burnout?
Here are some ideas about what’s happening and how to change it.

"As recently as five years ago, there was an expectation of respect for the expertise and sacrifice that a physician’s work entails.
But disrespect from patients is currently at an all-time high, sometimes even escalating to physical violence from patients."

This Labor Day weekend, break your addiction to multitasking.

“This explains the attraction of multitasking: It offers the false promise that we might somehow slip the bonds of our finitude. We tell ourselves that with sufficient self-discipline, plus the right time-management tricks, we might finally get on top of everything and feel good about ourselves at last. ”

Grief over the loss of my dog does still hit hard sometimes, but other times, it just is. It’s just life and its eventual end. The reality is that impermanence comes for us all.

I find I still speak of her in the present, because her memory is still so fresh and present, but the loss is accepted for what it is. No more. And no less.

Toward the conclusion of medical school, an oath is usually taken by the graduates–a symbolic commitment to their calling and a promise to guide their medical careers.

For years I had the impression that everyone either took the Hippocratic Oath or the Oath of Maimonides.

Contentment is underrated, underappreciated, and often overlooked.

Instead, we wildly chase its flashier cousins, happiness and joy, failing to notice what may be already here.

Because it is quiet contentment that brings a sense of peace and well-being, with more depth and endurance

The first day of internship is uniquely memorable. I still recall what I was wearing, meeting the other interns, starting work on the floors with my new team members who were all unknown entities, living in a new city, and learning my way around the city, the hospital, and my new role.

I remember the excitement of possibilities and yet the unspoken fear of not being good enough.

What do you remember?

This past week, I finally made substantial progress in some home repairs pending for more than a year.

The amount of energy that resulted in finally accomplishing this surprised me and spurred even more action and planned improvements.

Summer marked the start of medical school, with July being when clinical rotations commenced in the third year and when the transition to the fourth year occurred. July was when internship began, followed by each new year of residency. Fellowships began later but still in the summer.

“We behave like struggling actors auditioning for a big part, doing our best impressions of what we think the casting director wants. Drop the act. As a BOSS MD, you don't need someone to cast you in the big show.”

If you are looking for the lessons you didn’t learn in medical school concerning success on the nonclinical side of practicing medicine, look no further than this excellent book by my friend Amy Vertrees, MD: Become the BOSS MD: Success Beyond Residency

Doctors need to be on the front lines of the changes that need to happen in our healthcare system.

“But more and more doctors are coming to believe that the pandemic merely worsened the strain on a health care system that was already failing because it prioritizes profits over patient care.“

I have two articles this week on doctors and moral injury. The first is a personal account. The second is a more global look at what’s been happening to the medical profession as corporate interests interfere more and more in the delivery of care.

There may be some seeds in your garden that you didn’t plant or mean to plant. Seeds of discontent and burnout, born out of stress and dissatisfaction due to the pressures of our daily lives.
I believe deep-seated systemic problems plant the seeds of burnout. When we feel powerless and devoid of agency, these seeds find fertile, moist ground in which to thrive.
