I was away for a few weeks, so posting stopped. Back now and I have a fun video to share. The video shows a fluid flow called a vortex ring removing oil from a thin, porous material in a way that cleans both of its surfaces (top and bottom) at once.

The bodies of the jellyfish, squid, and prawns that live in the deep ocean are so transparent to light that they are nearly invisible to the animals that prey on them. Now researchers show that crustaceans can get around this problem by overlying the pigment with a refractive photonic glass made of crystalline nanospheres.

If Ranga Dias of the University of Rochester & his team have observed room-temperature (294 K), near-ambient pressure [1], their discovery could rank among the greatest scientific advances of the 21st century. But for the past 3 years, the team—& Dias in particular—has been shrouded in allegations of . The confirmed today that has launched an investigation into one of those allegations.

Eleonora Bilotta and her team design bronze pendants and silver earrings using models of chaos. “The beauty of chaos lies in the exploration of mathematical and philosophical ideas about the nature of the world and the infinite possibilities that exist within it,” Bilotta says.

So-called dusty plasmas exhibit collective behaviors, including the congregation of particles into string-like clusters (SLCs) when an external electric field is applied. SLCs were first reported 15 years ago, but researchers remain in the dark as to exactly how they develop. Now a team has figured out what forces are responsible for SLC formation--and its not what you might think.

Salt flats, deserts, & dry lakes host mysterious, unexplained patterns of interlocked polygons that grow on the salt-encrusted ground. Now researchers believe they can explain how these patterns form through the interaction between fluid flowing in the soil & fluid evaporating at the surface. The work appears to offer a unifying explanation for the growth of such polygons.

The electron may be catching up to the muon in terms of its ability to test the standard model through "g-2" measurements.

physics.aps.org/articles/v16/2

And since I am sharing a g-2 story, I'm going to link to our cartoon about the so-called muon g-2 anomaly because it was our first cartoon and it was really good.

Air bubbles bursting at the ocean’s surface create sea spray that spreads particles, including pollutants, into the atmosphere. Experiments now reveal exactly what determines whether one of those particles becomes airborne.
