Great paper on the hemodynamic effects of isolated alpha1 stimulation, many great points on cardiovascular physiology, not least a caution against equating blood pressure or vascular resistance with afterload. Resistance may increase while afterload falls! journals.lww.com/anesthesia-an

More challenging than a 🌽maze!
We still don't know what many helicases do in , but today Yang et al. get us one step closer with their study of the DEAD-box RNA helicase ZmRH48.

(fundamentals)

If it's a machine that has been constructed by humans, whilst it's in an ecosystem (space is also part of a planet's biosphere), that machine is not part of the life-supporting planetary system.

If it's a biological machine that has evolved over billions of years, that machine is part of the planet's life support systems. Those living machines are micro & macro-organisms (e.g., viruses, bacteria, fungi, plants, animals, etc.)

Wrapping up day 2 with a plethora of and research - our efforts are giving us more and more insight into how coralline algae reefs function!
And there are so many associated flora and fauna, which means the ecological connections are complex but essential to get a handle on for conservation and management - which ultimately may safeguard their future survival!

But what strikes me most is that it is becoming more and more easy to track flow changes in patient.

In their work, they present a little wearable Doppler ultrasound.

There is now no reason to justify that every mL of fluid given to improve the patient hemodynamics’ isn’t monitored accurately and that clinicians still rely on poor or inappropriate surrogates (including HR, MAP, PP, PPV, urine output, etc.)

Nice work by Jon-Emile Kenny et. al emphasizing that a significant amount of fluid challenge in ED are ineffective to improve flow, therefore can’t have any positive effect at all.

Blood rheology is impressively complex, but one important important factor in whole blood viscosity (besides hematocrit, temperature and protein content) is the glucose content. Increasing glucose levels thus increases vascular resistance, increasing vascular afterload and hence the oxygen requirements of the heart, concomitantly with worsening microvascular perfusion. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/

I stumbled on this old book* & am wondering if these data represent actual sex differences in sodium content of spleens.

The book is from 1926 and original cited source is a German book dated 1858.* Unfortunately I don't know any German apart from the swear words & bedtime prayer my mother taught me - so I can't look up the sample size. Perhaps the "Man" and "Woman" headers in Table 74 mean spleens from 1 man and 1 woman were analyzed. Even so - quite a huge difference.

A patient with stable coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes describes their threshold for angina being closely correlated with their blood glucose levels. What likely explains this phenomenon?

Something I’ve noticed my body doing lately as I’m waking up to go get my toddler up in the morning or if he’s crying at night, is that I can feel my blood pressure rising and a heating sensation in my chest and face.

Is that a natural thing to do? Seems like my body is getting itself ready to jump into action.
