Rhynie Man, an amazing cartoon-like Pictish carving on a 1.78m high stone dating back 1200-1500 years. It was found near Rhynie in Aberdeenshire in 1978 and is now in the headquarters of Aberdeenshire Council on the edge of Aberdeen. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/abe

The Battle of Dun Nechtain (also known as The Battle of Dunnichen, The Battle of Nechtanemere, Lin Garan, and The Battle of Nechtan) was a pivotal engagement between the Northumbrians under their king Ecgfrith and the Picts under the leadership of their king Brude Mac Bile (also known as King Bridei III). worldhistory.org/Battle_of_Dun

Excavations have been taking place on Dumyat, overlooking Stirling, investigating the ramparts and interiors of a hillfort which may originate over 2500 years ago but was probably also used in the early Historic period.

A collaboration between the local authority archaeologist, with local volunteers, and academics from University of Aberdeen's Northern Picts project, it's a great example of how we collaborate in Scotland to get more done together.

A new study on the origins of the Picts concludes that their origins were not "exotic" but local.
Genome analyses of individuals excavated from Pictish-era cemeteries at Lundin Links (Fife) and Balintore (Easter Ross) suggest that the Picts originated in the British Isles and that they may not have been matrilineal after all.

Feared by the Romans as fierce blue painted warriors, the have captured the imagination of historians for centuries. Today we know them through the wonderful art they left carved on stones. But so little is known about a People who lived in a large part of Scotland from 300 – 850 AD, that myth has replaced factual evidence about their culture.

13 Amazing Facts about the ancient people that protected Scotland from the Roman Empire.

Around 2000 years ago, ancient Celtic people known as the Picts roamed Scotland, and to the Romans they were considered worthy foes.

Despite many attempts by Romans to move in on Pictish territory, and having dominated other areas of Britain easily, they still could not conquer this ancient tribe.

In St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen, is this Pictish cross stone, probably associated with the first church founded on the site in c.580 CE. It was discovered in a stone dyke at Hillhead of Seaton in 1932.

β€œIt is widely held, and often repeated, that ancient Britons, and most especially the , painted or tattooed their bodies with Woad. We all know that, because depictions of the Iron Age or Roman period on television and film nearly always show the indigenous tribespeople painted in 'mystical' blue designs. It seems, however, that the evidence for Woad inspired body art is not as rock solid as one might have hoped.”

"A Young Daughter of the Picts," Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, c. 1585.

This is a study for an illustration for a book about the New World & its indigenous inhabitants, in a questionable attempt to equate ancient Europeans with then current Indigenous Americans. Certainly fanciful; the lady's botanical tattoos include plants unknown in Europe in the time of the Picts, & little is known of them or their culture.
