"Far away from Europe and far from its wars", in the midst of ongoing conflicts in 16th century Europe, Ronsard was yearning to escape. He invited his friends to leave with him and sail westward to the Fortunate Islands. The "Byrd of America", bottom left, is inspired by the Oxburg Hangings Mary Stuart embroidered while captive.
