It's just a normal late spring day at the feeders. The recent fledglings, like this #housefinch and #downywoodpecker, are caring for themselves. One reason I feed #birds year round is because I love to watch them bring their #fledglings to the #feeders. Here's a male #redbelliedwoodpecker feeding his baby boy on a tree next to the feeder. And a female #downywoodpecker feeding her baby boy, and then a picture of the baby having a go at the feeder himself. You can hear them for sure but as soon as you get close enough for a shot, they’re gone and that's if you can see them at all.This juvenile female Pileated Woodpecker was more interested in foraging for the ants on the ground than where I was.

This is a male pileated woodpecker. I took the photo a few months ago, there was a mated pair hanging out in nearby trees. In this photo he stopped what he was doing to look around.

A striking, large forest bird, the #PileatedWoodpecker can be quite elusive, you can hear them but not always see them. It took me four days of waiting and watching and tracking through the forest to get close up images.

This passed Wednesday, a friend and I walked a loop through #ShilohRanchRegionalPark, just outside of #WindsorCA. There was sun, there was rain, and lots of birds. Last photo includes a #PileatedWoodpecker. Has anyone used Merlin? It’s a great bird app.

Looks like this male is making a large crevice. Came back on a second day to continue the work for a couple hours.

We get to see lots of smaller, black and white downy woodpeckers but the much larger pileated variety is a rare treat. These are 16-19" long!

This was at the very edge of our property, across the stream, way up on a massive, very dead ash tree. I walked down to the stream, and s/he paid no mind to me.

Out on a limb?

This pileated woodpecker wasn't alone, there was another one nearby. And there was a red-tailed hawk in the air. But the woodpeckers didn't seem alarmed.

Pileated Woodpecker.

I usually browse through photos using "MS Photos." Then when I find the one that I want, I open it with Lightroom. But the photos automatically open with the application that was last used. So, if I forget to "open with," on the first photo, it often opens with Lightroom. That's what happened here, but it's a pileated woodpecker which is always interesting, so here it is.
