Your periodic reminder that changing the background color on a document is a great way to make sure you are editing the active document (yes I know you can lock it, but color is sooo easy).

Hey Team Academia,
What resources would you share with Zach as he writes his first letters of recommendation?

Assembling a strains table for a manuscript. >100 yeast strains. Wow!! I owe my lab a happy hour.

I want to share my go-to resource for science writing.
Angelika H. Hofmann's Scientific Writing and Communication.
Whenever I get stuck on a section, I read her relevant chapter and it just makes writing so much easier! For example, I'm writing the Discussion section, she lays out what should go where and why, talks about common mistakes, and then provides a handy little checklist. So clear!!
What are your favs for #sciencewriting #sciencecommunication #PiLife #AcademicChatter ?

I learned that you should never use a binocular microscope with only one eye.
I'm working with a scientist with a lot of years under their belt but maybe not the best prior training. They seem unable/unwilling to use both eyes. For our compound scope, I know this is a problem because they need depth perception for certain manipulations. Is it also a problem for a compound microscope?
Are there tips I can share to help them?

It's great to be able to say to a former lab member. "It’s a good thing that your notes are so well organized because they remember a lot more than you or I do."

You periodic reminder that digital notebooks are awesome!!
I'm working on a manuscript. I know a former lab member worked on the project when we thought it was going in direction X, but now we realize its direction Y. It only took 40 minutes for me to find and review each piece of data.
This saves me work in not having to repeat experiments I've forgotten about, and allows me to accurately attribute contributions to people who are no-longer in the lab.

Nice article from my grad colleague Erin Cram and her postdoc Mustafi Amin on how to do a protocol. It's written for undergrads learning how to do life-sciences bench work.

It's a nice counterpart for my article written to help PIs teach students how to master the skill of mastering skills.

Why do I feel like the jerk? In the past, I organized an activity through my auspices as DEI lead, however, the activity really should be run by another committee.
I finally pushed it to the other committee who pushed it to an admin that I interact with extensively. The activity requires decisions from a faculty member, but I'm refusing to make those decisions for the admin (as is the lead of the other committee).
Why do I feel like the jerk who foisted it onto the admin?

Without worrying about the impact of my research rising to the top of the field, I might not take the time to enunciate the implications of my work in a way that motivates me and my team to keep pushing for success.
Without the excuse of trying to improve my grant, my colleagues might find it difficult to find time to really think about my science and suggest transformative approaches or ideas.

There are things to hate about grant writing, but I think it ultimately helps me do better science. Maybe it is just me, but without a looming deadline, I find it hard to carve out time to sit and think deeply about where my science should be going. Without the worry that a reviewer knows some article with data that tanks our premise, I find it hard to carve out time to do a deep dive into the literature.

Gotta love colleagues like this!!
I've been back burner-ing revising a R21 while wrapping up a grant for my core research, which was due today.
The R21 will take me into a totally new area of research that is super exciting but I need a lot of help from a colleague- because it's a !really! new direction.
I just checked the deadlines and whelp-it's going to be a fun 12 days!!
I told the colleague they could kibosh this, and they said 'Full steam ahead!!'
Nice to spend my birthday trying to get university finance to pay for image bank images already funded with a grant before the deadline for the whole project explodes.
Ahhh, it's a good Saturday morning when your 9 am Monday morning meeting gets canceled!
