Image taken by the James Webb Space Telescope’s mid-infrared instrument (MIRI). Mid-infrared light specializes in detailing where dust and gas is. Here, the densest areas of dust are the darkest shades of gray, while the red region toward the top is where the dust is diffuse and cooler.

A new look at the Pillars of Creation from #JWST — a star-forming region in the Eagle Nebula.
This is an image made by combining near-infrared and mid-infrared light.
Stars primarily show up in near-infrared light. In mid-infrared light, dust in these cold, dark pillars glows.
The lava-like area at the top edge of the second pillar comes from ejections from newly forming stars, which shock the surrounding gas.
