Au cours de leurs voyages, ils traversèrent le vaste champ volcanique #Pinacate (ci-dessous, contient des données Copernicus Sentinel modifiées, 2023), qui comprend des centaines de cônes et coulées. Ils identifièrent les roches basaltiques comme ayant autrefois été liquides. Une découverte généralement attribuée à Jean-Étienne Guettard… 50 ans plus tard !

The “#Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve” in the State of #Sonora, #Mexico, is one of the most spectacular and inhospitable places on Earth (temperatures can reach 50 C in summer) but it is home to a binational (US-Mexico) ethnic group, the #Tohono O’odham, who consider this dormant volcano field as sacred ground. They believe their main god, I'itoi, resides in this place, where the universe was also created. The Pinacate was added to the #UNESCO World Heritage list in 2013.
