Now spring is moving along! Birds newly arrived on this morning's walk:
And continuing scads and scads of flocks. Continual nonstop butterbutt chip notes outside my window right now.
Solid migratory movement on radar last night - checks out!

Re pine siskin - the giveaway is the un-finchlike very narrow sharp bill. Several years ago, one got stunned striking our back door. The weather was atrocious so I brought it in to a little quickly made up sick bay in our bathroom. It recovered within the hour. Once it was flying there, I did a catch and release.

Who is this?

Much of the bird hunting I do is from my backyard. I sit out there with my camera and watch the bird feeders and surrounding trees and shrubs. I take a lot of pictures, mostly chipping sparrows and cardinals. I see birds off in the distance and snap a picture thinking it's probably a sparrow. But occasionally when I look through the photos, I have to ask myself, "what is this?" That is the case with this pine siskin, I've never before photographed one, so I had to identify it first.

"Flocks of tiny Pine Siskins may monopolize your thistle feeder one winter and be absent the next. This nomadic finch ranges widely and erratically across the continent each winter in response to seed crops. Better suited to clinging to branch tips than to hopping along the ground, these brown-streaked acrobats flash yellow wing markings as they flutter while feeding or as they explode into flight." - allaboutbirds.org

Anyone else still doing this? Day 5 brings you this adorable I captured in my yard last spring. Little ones were travelling through to the northern forests where they spend their summers. Even living in the middle of the city we see a good variety of migratory species. You just have to be observant!
