Pine Warblers increased across their range from 1966 - 2000 (blue regions on maps). Since then they've been fluctuating but overall relatively stable. That survey-wide stability is a composite of decreases in the south (red coloured regions in south) and ongoing increases in the north (blue coloured regions).

You can trust me, come a little closer.

The shifty eye looks on the pine warbler is cause by a black stripe that goes right through its eye. It makes the bird look like a back-alley villain. I'm not certain whether the stripe is feathering color or shadow. Oh ... it's feather color, I have other photos.

"A bird true to its name, the Pine Warbler is common in many eastern pine forests and is rarely seen away from pines. These yellowish warblers are hard to spot as they move along high branches to prod clumps of needles with their sturdy bills. If you don’t see them, listen for their steady, musical trill, which sounds very like a Chipping Sparrow or Dark-eyed Junco, which are also common piney-woods sounds through much of the year." - allaboutbirds.org

Not completely effective camo.

I found this pine warbler during a walk in the woods. At first, I thought it was a goldfinch because there were a lot of those around. I even tooted a photo of it as a goldfinch; a Mastodon friend tactfully suggested that I take another look 😂.

This bird looks like an adult male. The females have a bit greyer and slight lighter shade of yellow, but it really is hard to tell.

"The only warbler that regularly eats seeds, the Pine Warbler will eat millet, cracked corn, sunflower seed, peanuts, and suet from elevated feeders in winter. It may also eat fruits from bushes and vines, like bayberry, flowering dogwood, grape, sumac, persimmon, and Virginia creeper." - allaboutbirds.org

Darn, didn't see the yellow on the right! Still trying to capture the three primary colors at the feeder* in a single shot.

*Keep feeders clean and sanitized

A couple of still hanging out in the New England October. They have moved south by now.
