76 followers · 473 posts · Server sfba.socialWhile camping in Pinnacles National Park this last weekend my daughter killed a gnat in our tent, only to find a faint smear of bioluminescence on the bug's body. Barely visible in the complete dark, but definitely there.
California doesn't really have fireflies, I'd only experienced them in the midwest or east coast. I didn't know had any California insects that glowed all.
Unfortunately I can't figure out what bug it was! Most of the ones I found online were far to big. This was tiny, and not visible until it was dead, unfortunately.
So if anyone has any ideas let me know! The campsite was near a creek, if that helps.

My kiddo at Bear Gulch cave at Pinnacles National Park. We camped over the weekend, enduring the heat but having a good time.
The Pinnacles is an extinct volcano that was split in half by the San Andreas fault, now roughly 200 miles apart. There are waterfalls throughout the cave, hiding in the darkness.

The reservoir is a nice spot to hang out and "do nothing," too
When we were there 9 years(!) ago, a juvenile peregrine falcon landed near us and sat and checked us out for a while. No falcons this time, but lots of dragonflies, frogs, garter snakes, and more

Probably a stretch for #FensterFreitag but this "window" in the rock is just one of the cool views you get on the short but occasionally challenging Moses Spring Trail to the reservoir

Bear Gulch Reservoir, Pinnacles National Park, California
Pinnacles is the western half of an ancient volcano that once straddled the San Andreas fault. There is a system of caves under the mountain, but they were only open in dry years and I can only recall exploring them once. But that was 30 years ago, 20 years before “drought” became part of our new normal. I'm curious what happened to those caves and this tiny reservoir those years, and what it looks like now after our record rainfall.

Pinnacles is the west half of an ancient volcano that once straddled the San Andreas fault. In the picture is a seasonal creek that flows through a network of caves under the mountain. There is a trail through the caves, but it's only open when the water level is low enough. We used to hike here at least annually, and I only remember the caves being open once.
This pic is from 1992, 10 years before “drought” became part of the California lifestyle. I'm curious how many of the last 10 years those caves have been open, and what they look like after this year's record rainfall.
